Timeless Oast Houses, orchards bursting with fruit, tables groaning with food, the sun shining.... Darling Buds of May presented an idyllic view of Kent, one that, to a large extent, hasn't changed to this day. The series dominated the TV charts in the 1990s, and secured David Jason's place as a national treasure. The series was filmed in and around Pluckley, less than two miles from author H E Bates' home. Bates' family still live in Pluckley, and many locals will regale you with stories about filming the series here. The Larkins' farm is Buss Farm, on the Smarden Road just outside the village. It's a private farm, but it's open once a year to the public, for a Classic Car Rally. You can come to the farm and see all the locations from the series. Step into the village square in Pluckley and you'll find yourself straight in the heart of Darling Buds territory. To one side, the Black Horse, which doubled as Pa Larkin's favourite pub... the Butchers and the village store where so much of the drama took place... the Brigadier's house... and of course the church where Catherine Zeta Jones got married - and no sign of Michael Douglas! The series left a huge impression on the national psyche... a reminder of a more innocent time - a time that hasn't entirely disappeared - it's right here in Pluckley!
